I surprised when one of my students didn’t really have a signature. She was trying to create one. I asked why. She said that she never really learned cursive and didn’t really need it. This made sense to me. So I asked a few other students and parents about their children. And some said that their children didn’t know how, because they never used it.
They are taught it when they are in a certain grade, but are not required to write papers using it. In fact they are not allowed. I know it seems kind of sad that this is disappearing and to some it seems that this generation and future generations are being robbed of a gift.
I guess I think of a future of being in an old folk’s home passing cursive notes to others of my generation, and the younger staff being upset about not being able to read my “scribble.”
Things come and go. I don’t think this generation is stupid for not knowing it, but I do feel a sadness and yes surprised, because I just assumed they new how to read and write cursive writing.
